Bethanechol is a muscarinic agonist used to treat postoperative and postpartum nonobstructive functional urinary retention and neurogenic atony of the bladder with retention. It works by mimicking the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, and binding to cholinergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the bladder.
